Our Mission
The Kabuyanda Parish is in a poor rural area of Isingiro province in Southwest Uganda. The Parish, which is part of the Mbarara Diocese, is run by the Montfortian Missionaries.
In 2018, The former Parish Priest of Kabuyanda (Father Ernest Akhonya Mukavana) appealed to one of our parishioners who he knew for help in painting a one room medical centre. After much discussion, it was decided that a better facility was needed and plans and bills of quantity were produced to build a 3 ward, 45 bed unit with operating room, pharmacy and pathology lab. A registered Charity, Kabuyanda Health, was established with 4 of St Augustine’s parishioners as Trustees.
The initial budget was £70k but with improvements to specification and delays and cost increases due to Covid, the final cost when the centre opened in 2021 was some £125k. Many fundraising events have been held within St Augustine’s from Race Nights, Quizzes, Coffee Mornings, musical evenings, theatrical performances and generous donations. The Charity has also had great support from Holy Name Parish in Jesmond and St Theresa's in Heaton. The health Centre is owned and operated by The Mbarara Diocese and is funded by a mixture of Uganda State monies and local church support.
Father Ernest visited St Augustine’s in October 2022, offering Mass and thanking all for their support and stressing the improvements in peoples’ lives and health which were accruing.
Kabuyanda Health continues to raise monies to support the provision of health care in Kabuyanda and The Trustees are currently awaiting proposals from the clinical team in Uganda regarding the next steps in the development.
